"SMALL TIPS"
  • Water in Santorini is not safe to drink. Most of tourists prefer bottled spring water which is available at supermarkets and restaurants.
  • On Santorini you will find electrical current at 220 volts, 50-cycle AC. Appliances of lower voltage would require a transformer, but again it is recommended that appliances are checked for safety and plug requirements before use.
  • Internationally recognized credit cards are accepted at many restaurants and shops throughout Santorini.
  • Dangerous drugs, including marijuana, are not permitted on Santorini. Visitors are subject to detention, court trial and severe penalties.

Travel

  • With sunny, hot (but dry) summers and mild winters, Santorini has an ideal climate for visitors to enjoy. In most of the country, including Santorini, it seldom rains in the summer. The rainy season is usually November to February. Remember, the sun is fierce, so carry sunburn cream, a wide-brimmed hat and wear clothes with sleeves you can roll down.
  • If you would like to extend your visit to Greece more than three months, you must have the necessary permit from the Aliens' Bureau. For information call (010)770-5711 or check with the Santorini police.
  • Supermarkets and gourmet shops stock delicacies from around the world. Some small shops, often run as a family concern, stay open as late at 22.00 hrs every day to sell fruit, vegetables, confectionery, cigarettes, ice creams, cool drinks, newspapers, etc.
  • Greece uses the metric system of weights and measures. For those not familiar with the metric system, the following conversions are offered as a guide: 25 millimeters (mm) is approximately one inch; 1 meter (m) is a little more than a yard; 1 kilometers per hour is just over 35 miles per hour; and 25 degrees Celsius (C) is a warm 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Greek time is GMT plus two hours.
  • Modern Greek is the national language, although English and French are spoken widely and German is used in business circles.
  • Driving on Santorini and anywhere else in Greece can be done either with vehicles owned by tourists or rented ones. A valid driver's license from the country of origin and international permit (obtained from the Greek Automobile & Touring Club, known as ELPA) are a must, as are insurance and registration. Driving is on the right.
  • No license is required for fishing from the harbor so those interested in this sport can enjoy it. However if you are spear gun fishing, keep in mind to be at least 200m. away from any other people in the water, as provided for by law.
  • You will always find a pharmacy near you on Santorini, marked with a green cross. One is usually open 24 hours in Fira on an alternate basis.
