KAMENI ISLAND
The closer you get
to the peak, the stronger the smell of sulphur from the two craters
becomes, from various points of which smoke and gas rise from the
volcano.
This is where the tourist boat trips usually end.
However, you may carry on south along the path until you reach the
small bay at Taxiarhes, but do this with care because there are
certain lava blocks that are quite unsteady.
It is useful to have with you the informative guide to the
volcano pro-duced by the Institute for the Study and Observation of
the Santorini Volcano that also includes a detailed map of the
various pathways as well as related information.
Equally
impressive as a walk around the volcano is the cruise around Nea
Kameni. As soon as you reach the bay of Aghios Nikolaos (Hot
Springs), take a dive into the warm clear green waters and then take
the path leading to the crater created by the erup-tion in 726 AD,
that is now a small, quiet lake.
Trips to the Kameni islands
are organised by our tourist agencie.
Do not forget to take a
hat, sunglasses and climbing shoes or sport shoes with you. And
definitely, a bottle of water. |
