The
beaches of Santorini show the signs of volcanic activity 3,500 years
ago. Santorini has unique beaches with white, red, or black sand. In the
summer, the black sand gets so hot that you'll have to have a grass mat .
KAMARI BEACH
Kamari is a huge gray sand
beach on the northern flank of IIias Profitius (Mount Elijah). This beach
hosts enormous crowds in the summertime, and is served by countless
restaurants, tavernas, bars, pizza shacks, vendors, clothing shops, and
lodgings. The beach and its community bustle day and night. The water
turns deep quickly, and there are large waves. Chairs and umbrellas are
for rent. Restrooms are only in bars and restaurants. Bus service to and
from Fira is available. |

PERISSA BEACH
Perissa is a black sand
beach sitting on the southern flank of Pofitis IIias, just around the
mountain from Kamari, except here the sand is blacker, finer, softer,
hotter and there is far less commerce and bustle to distract the
sunbather. Chairs and umbrellas are for rent. Bus service to Fira.
RED BEACH
If you take the bus to Akrotiri to see the ruins
(morning is a good time to do this), you can trek on after the archaeology
and visit he red sand beach nearby. The beach has fine red sand and rocks.
There is a small shop here selling everything from Pepsi to prickly-pears,
except watch out for the prices, they can be all wrong. There are chairs
and umbrellas for rent, and paddleboats as well. Plenty of sand and good
swimming, all within a mile of and ancient Minoan settlement. |

Just north of Kamari
and on the eastern coast is the beach of Monolithos. Here
you will find more peace and quiet than other Santorini beaches,
however with all the comforts of the other beaches as there are
bungalows facilities for snacks and meals
available. | |
